“A good neighbor of mine told me they weren’t going to tell them if it was a suspected bomb or what was going on.”
One person living in the area said they had been evacuated from their homes for about an hour before rescue workers said it was safe to go back inside.
A Royal Logistics Corps van is parked at the scene of the crime.
Emergency services from the Manchester fire brigade are also said to have been on site.
The use of the emergency service had largely disappeared by 6.30 p.m.
A Defense Department spokesman said: “At the request of local police, an Army explosive device disposal team was called to Rochdale and a Royal Logistics Corps team responded, with the item safely removed.”
A comment has been made to the Greater Manchester Police Department.
