Victoria Molyneux and Paige Travis, both from Rochdale, have been called up to a 20-strong English women’s squad that will face France in the sport’s first live game this weekend.

Molyneux, who teaches sports with Matthew Moss, 33, is the current vice-captain of the Wigan Warriors Women, and Travis, 21, of Littleborough, both previously represented England.

The two will compete in the match on Saturday (23 October), which will be broadcast on BBC Two, for the first time ever to feature an English women’s rugby league international on terrestrial television.

The England calling is the third for Molyneux, who made her England debut against France in 2007 as a teenager. After a 14-year hiatus, she returned to international rugby earlier this year and played in England’s win against Wales in June 2021.

Travis, a former Hollingworth Academy student, was selected for the English team in May 2020 and made her international debut in June after joining St Helens this year. She has made 12 appearances for the St. Helens team, previously representing Firwood Waterloo.

Molyneux started playing rugby when she was 10 and represented the Rochdale boys team. Molyneux is an easy striker for Wigan and is sponsored by Rochdale Mayfield. She also represented Lancashire as a junior.

Molyneux previously played for Hillside Hawks and Leigh East before joining Wigan in 2019. She is also a current member and captain of the Team GB Teachers roster and was selected for the England Performance Squad in 2020. She was from. Voted striker of the year 2021 by supporters of the Women’s Rugby League Podcast.

The duo recently hosted a girls-only rugby league session in Mayfield.
