Val Brannigan retired on December 24th, 2021
After 35 years as personal banking advisor to Heywood and Rochdale, Val Brannigan has called it a day and retired on December 24, 2021.
In February 1986 Val, then 30 years old, began her career with what was then N&P National and Provincial, based in Heywood, which became Abbey National and then Santander through acquisitions.
She stayed there for 27 years before moving to the Rochdale branch after the Heywood store closed eight years ago.
In her work as a personal bank advisor, she looks after customers personally at the counter and by appointment, opens bank accounts, savings accounts and offers a wide range of products and solves any problems for bank customers.
Throughout its activity, Val has made many friends and loyal customers over the years. During the pandemic lockdown, Val contacted customers at risk to make sure they had access to their money and that they were safe.
Now she retired before her 66th birthday in January – and at the end of her last day she was surprised with a bouquet of flowers by her granddaughters Jessica and Ella.

Their sons Laurence, Lewis and Lloyd Brannigan said: “We wish Mom a fantastic retirement that she will enjoy with her grandchildren, family and friends.
“We remember when we were kids shopping at Morrisons Heywood, and you and Asda Rochdale couldn’t walk from aisle to another without a customer stopping mom at the bank.
“We have heard many stories over the years, but what stands out the most are the stories of mothers who have been in touch with vulnerable and elderly customers during harder times like the bans to make sure they have access to their finances and the Don’t miss out on basics like grocery shopping because the store was closed.
“Mama took a lot of time to do this, especially because she knows so many customers who she regularly meet in the branch. Sometimes she talked to some customers for 30 minutes on the phone because they were not in contact with many other people during the lockdown, so mom was a welcome friendly voice on the end of the phone.
“It is Mommy’s caring and conscientious nature who have had a fabulous 35 plus year career with the banking giant, and in that time they have paid off their gratitude by assisting Mama with her own personal challenges and losses for which we are all are grateful. “
Speaking to Santander, Val said: “I’ve been on a long journey for the past 35 years. My son Laurence was five months old when I started my career at National and Provincial, from talking in a pub to Pat Humphries working in Rochdale. I didn’t even bother about jobs back then.
“It wasn’t just a job. I could take care of my family; Building relationships with customers has been an important part of my 27 years at Heywood. Lots of great memories.
“I am proud of what I have achieved and everything that it means to me. I feel like I am going at the right time and my journey here is now complete.
“I’m looking forward to spending more time with [grandchildren] Jessica, Ella and Bruno. Who knows what the future holds for me.
“You are all amazing individuals and I wish you all a bright future and happiness.”
