Now is the time when many of you with the greatest intentions begin to ponder this new exercise regimen and / or begin THIS DIET!
But for the thousands of you planning to start with a bang in January, it doesn’t always mean you will achieve your goals.
Unfortunately, studies show that 55% of traditional gym goers don’t know what they’re doing, and many are just copying others.
Likewise, 80% of people who visit a traditional gym in January will quit within 5 months, and interestingly 50% of members who quit gym membership in the first year will quit in the first 3 months – why ?; because their exercise program was too tough and not tailored to their skills or goals. Once we set foot in the door, the temptation is too often to overdo it in the first few sessions!
Also, one of the main reasons people fail to achieve their goals is that they are stuck in a dead end and doing the same thing. Attending the same class, exercising at the same level, or performing the same exercise with the same weight for an extended period of time (e.g. several months) can cause a person’s health or fitness to begin or even decline on a plateau.
It is precisely for this reason that we support and accompany each member at onePT, Personal Training and Gym in Rochdale at every step of our very comprehensive member journey; From the initial health and exercise assessment to the monthly inclusive personal training sessions, where many members take advantage of additional PT packages, and then stay connected to their PT through our apps and technology even when the member is not in Gym is.
Perhaps most importantly, our members are assigned the personal trainer who best suits the individual’s training experience, goals and critical personality; the coach you are most likely to deal with!
But isn’t it a luxury to have a personal trainer?
“Not anymore,” comments Dr. Neil Fell, Co-Founder of onePT, “I think in the past people have often perceived that personal trainers / coaches were only reserved for athletes and the rich and famous or celebrity, but in recent years people have really started to improve their health and appreciate their wellbeing much more.
“Having a personal trainer can be seen as an investment in your own future. I have always believed that prevention is better than cure. Exercise and a healthy lifestyle can improve not only your physical health, but also your mental health. Despite this pandemic, this has been so important over the past two years. “
Neil adds that having a personal trainer gives you some amazing benefits:
- Coaching – having someone on hand to make sure you are doing each exercise in proper form; Make sure to finish the last rep or the last few seconds and not give up too quickly, or check how you are feeling and find out on certain days that you may have to take your foot off the gas!
- Additional motivation – with onePT you have unlimited access to the gym – but regular sessions with your PT can increase your motivation to continue your exercise program. During the PT sessions, you will also have the opportunity to discuss other aspects related to your health and fitness goals – such as some of the dietary changes you might want to make.
- Accountability – Exercising alone makes it easy to skip sessions or fall off the cart completely. Working with a personal trainer will help keep you accountable and increase the chances of you sticking to your exercise regimen.
- Variety – Our PTs teach you a variety of training methods that will save you from boredom and further increase your fitness.
- Efficiency – Your personal trainer, especially around onePT, will be able to use your training time optimally, which increases the efficiency of your training. This is especially beneficial when you have limited time to exercise.
We know many of you will have a fitness goal for 2022, but it is often said that a goal without a plan is just a dream.
At onePT, we believe that fitness is a journey, not a destination, it doesn’t have to end. The results obtained are more likely to be sustainable if you make lifestyle and behavioral changes – one or two at a time, which will then become part of your everyday life. However, we know that for some of you, you may need this limited amount of time to get started – a realistic timescale to commit to and focus on, but end up seeing some really positive results while also establishing positive habits that is easy to maintain.
And that’s why we launched the onePT 12 Week Transformation Program – 12 weeks of training and nutrition to enable you to achieve the best and most sustainable transformation of your life.
“I think the fantastic thing about the two transformation programs we ran in 2021 is that 100% of the participants continued as members of onePT, with a good number using either individual or small group PT packages and some. “Even signing up for the next 12-week program.” Said John Carroll, co-owner.

“The onePT transformation program was the best decision I have ever made for myself. Not only have my health and fitness improved, my clothes fit better, but the effects on my confidence, mood, sleep, and general wellbeing have been unimaginable. I never thought that I would be the person who really enjoys exercise and who looks forward to it! “Saira (onePT transformation program member)
“Do exactly what it says on the tin. I arrived in bad shape 12 weeks ago. The 12 week program gave me the kick-start I needed to improve my general fitness and lifestyle. “Salim (onePT Transformation Program Member)
“The transformation is absolutely brilliant. I lost a stone and two sizes of clothes in 12 weeks. I feel fitter, stronger and a lot healthier. All of the trainers are fantastic and encourage you every step of the way. I can’t wait to do another one. “Linda (member of the onePT transformation program)
“I heard about this program from a friend and thought I would try it. I’m so glad I did as everyone is super friendly. I am so pleased with my results in just 12 weeks; I wanted to get fitter and stronger, but I also lost inches, which was a bonus! “Alison, (member of the onePT transformation program)
Neil points out, “If you are starting your fitness journey in 2022 and have not exercised for a long time, please remember to be patient – build it up gradually. In the first few weeks, it is good to concentrate on exercise and the right technique. For many of you, you may have worked at home and slipped into some bad habits regarding your posture and mobility. “
“Believe in the process and follow it. At onePT we have a saying, “adds John,” Achieve your behavioral goals and you will achieve your results goals. Many people will primarily focus on their outcome goal, which may be weight loss, but then won’t actually look at or identify the behavioral changes that, if made, would actually result in someone achieving their outcome goals.
“For example, a simple behavioral goal might be to start exercising 2 or 3 times a week – by making a commitment to going to the gym or hiring a personal trainer once a week. By increasing the activity and keeping everything else the same, it would pay off in terms of weight loss. “
“Another great example,” adds Neil, “is the person who likes sugar in their tea – one teaspoon of sugar is about 4 grams, or 16 kcal; So if you have a sweet tooth and like 2 teaspoons of sugar per cup, then 5 cups of tea would yield 160 kcal per day, or 1120 kcal per week from sugar alone. We often say that it takes 21 days to develop a habit – and it takes about 3 weeks for your taste buds to physiologically adjust to the “lack of sweetness” – and 3 weeks of tea at 2 teaspoons per cup would be 3360 Kcal (almost equivalent to 1 pound of fat).
“Similar examples could be replacing carbonated beverages with water, or a starting point could be choosing liqueurs with no added sugar. All of this can be a stepping stone. By helping people achieve their behavioral goals – and ultimately helping them change their lifestyle – people will then achieve their outcome goals. Other behavior / lifestyle goals can include taking a daily step count, eating more fruits and vegetables, or adding some protein to each meal. “

Dr. Fell comments: “We have always taken the cleanliness and hygiene of our facility very seriously and, even before the pandemic, we always had disinfection stations on site – we have just doubled the number. Each member is also assigned a bracelet that is linked to their membership. Members use this bracelet to gain access to the facility, which in turn registers their presence. This means that members can check (via the members app) how busy the club is before they come to training. “
