St Andrew’s, Dearnley

The big day is here at last! Our annual Autumn Fair is to be held in Church today (Saturday) from 11am to 1pm and such a lot is riding on it because it’s our biggest fund-raiser of the year and rarely has there been a bigger need for its financial success.

Preparations began in earnest last night (Friday) and final touches were put in place earlier this morning.

The U3a (University of the Third Age) choir from the Littleborough branch of the national organization will be in attendance so this is for anyone who is interested in U3a as well as those interested in St Andrew’s, which serves Smithy Bridge and Smallbridge as well as Dearnley.

We also have an interest in Wardle in that it is part of our Benefice and our ministry team, headed by the Rev Rachel Battershell, looks after the Anglican side of Wardle Village Church, which doubles up as Church for the Methodists on alternate Sundays.

Rev Rachel is currently away on sabbatical, but other members of the ministry team will be there, as will church officers and members of the PCC.

We cover a huge, heavily-populated area and we hope today’s attendance at the Fair will reflect that in the knowledge that we are here for baptisms, marriages and funerals – and many other pastoral requirements in the community – as well as for church services in midweek and on Sundays, i.e. online. The Fair will comprise of all the usual stalls, from which we will sell home-made cakes, home-made preserves, jams and chutneys, books, other items and presents for Christmas etc on a special stall run by our local branch of the Mothers Union.

As well as all that –and the home-made stalls always prove particularly popular – there will be a raffle, a bottle stall – tombola, not forgetting refreshments, which will include the ever-popular bacon butties.

Do join us if you can, not only to see if there is anything at the fair to interest you, but to meet others, have a chat over a cuppa, share a few yarns, listen to the U3a choir and even have a light lunch if bacon butties are your thing.

Entry is free. See you there!

On a different tack, our annual service for All Souls, our loved ones who have passed on, will be tomorrow week, October 30, at 3pm. If you are unable to come add the name of your loved one(s) whom you wish to be remembered on the sheet at the back of church.

In church tomorrow we have our usual Sung Eucharist at 9.30am.

St Mary’s, Balderstone

This morning is our women’s breakfast, and we’d love for you to join us. The breakfast takes place in the parish room between 9am and 10.30am. There’ll also be a short thought on biblical women – ‘The Godly Wife: From wisdom to honour’. There is no charge for the breakfast, but donations are accepted.

A church is built on community, and community is about people. If you’re reading this, then you’re a welcome part of our community and you’re invited to join us tomorrow at church. Our service starts at 10.30am, we’ll be looking at Colossians chapter two verses six to fifteen – ‘Spiritual Fullness in Christ’. Sunday School will be available for ages four – 11. Light refreshments are served in the parish room after the service. If you are visiting, do join us for a chat.

Tomorrow evening is our weekly prayer gathering between 6.30pm-7.30pm. This week we are hosting, we’d love you to join us.

Since it is half term there will be no SMurFs this week. We hope all the children have a fun holiday and look forward to hearing about it when the groups resume next week.

We’d like to say a special thank you to the children of our day school who have decorated our window sills with some wonderful harvest displays.

Advance notice: November 19, 7pm, is our Big Quiz Night for Tearfund! Come along and have some fun and help Tearfund with all the poverty-building work they do. We’ll also be having a pie supper (meat and potato or cheese and onion). Tickets (£5) available on Sunday’s or via email. Bring your team, we can’t wait to see you all!
