HMR Circle hosted a 1960s-themed dinner for 130 residents at the offices of Zen Internet in Sandbrook Park.

The group runs services such as meals on wheels, sports and crafts groups and a digital support service for elderly residents in Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale.

On Tuesday March 15, the members were treated to a 1960s menu as well as a talk on the decade from Zen CEO Paul Stobart.

Circle director Mark Wynn said it was the first dinner since the group’s Christmas event last year.

“It was fantastic. Everything went like clockwork,” said Mark.

“It was just fabulous, the food was perfect, it was a great atmosphere. The staff at Zen were brilliant and from start to finish – it was just perfect.”

The 60s-inspired three-course meal included minestrone soup, prawn cocktail, mushroom stroganoff and trifle.

Mark added that the event allowed Circle members to share some of their memories from the decade.

He said: “The entire thing was 60s themed, there was 60s music in the background, and some of the members dressed up in 60s gear.

“Paul went through the major turning points of the 1960s like Woodstock, JFK, and the landing on the moon.

“The members would have been in their formative years. A lot of them were born in the 40s and 50s so the 60s would have been their adolescence so it brought back some great memories for them. They loved it.”

Mark also said Zen founder Richard Tang was helping to serve food and that he was working on future events and volunteering opportunities with the internet provider company.

“The members rang or emailed Zen to say how good it was. I know some of them have even written letters to Zen to thank them for their hospitality,” said Mark.

“They said just how good it was. The common phrase was ‘nothing seemed to be too much trouble’.

“It’s a really good relationship we have with Zen. It was just great to see everyone and catch up.”
