Plans have been submitted to convert a warehouse into a Culinary Arts School and café.

Situated on Sherwood Business Park in Castleton, the warehouse unit would be converted to provide culinary training to 40 students.

The warehouse has been used as a storage facility for food and kitchenware supplies but was originally used as a training center and storage facility for the NHS.

According to planning documents submitted to Rochdale Borough Council, the applicant – a Ms Lisa Yam from Haowei Property Ltd – wishes to convert the warehouse to provide ‘real-life training in the hospitality sector so diversifying the opportunities of the workforce in the surrounding area’ .

It also states that: “The project is also aiming to promote healthy eating and lifestyle within the local community.”

Part of the plans also include a café/takeaway shop which students at the school will run from Tuesday to Thursday.

The plans say: “All the students will take turns of being in charge of the café and takeaway once their competence and willingness has been approved by the teaching bosses.

“The teaching bosses, administrative teachers and students will be working together to decide the weekly menus and work rota for the café in conjunction with curriculum.

“The customers will pay less than average price for the student chefs’ dishes and they will serve the food to the diners and will expect feedback in order to improve their skills.”
