New jobs could be created by building a new shop at an existing petrol station.

A new shop is proposed on the Marland Service Station site on Bolton Road in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, which currently houses a Texaco gas station and premier shop.

The application was made by GM Petroleum Ltd to the Rochdale Council, which says the remediation would create a “remarkable amount” of new jobs.

According to the planning documents, “the applicant intends to bring the site into the 21st century and provide an improved retail offering for the modern consumer / motorist”.

The planning communication also states: “The demolition of the existing forecourt shop and its new construction with replacement as well as the associated landscaping and site upgrading are requested for approval.

“The shop will have a practical ‘top-up’ retail outlet as well as a ‘food-to-go’ area with freshly made sandwiches and baked goods, mainly for external consumption.

“Approving the proposal would mean redeveloping a previously developed, easily accessible site to provide much-needed, improved road service, promote consumer choice and create job opportunities for local residents in times of economic uncertainty.”
