Rochdale people are invited to attend National Adoption Week to learn about the modern adoption process.

This year’s action week aims to shed light on real adoption stories with a well-rounded, honest and integrative representation of the journey – to show the ups and downs and to represent all voices involved in the process.

Rochdale Borough Council’s local adoption agency, Adoption Now, is backing the campaign to educate and educate people about adoption in today’s world and to give voice to those whose stories are often less heard, such as: adopted children, adopted adults, adoptive parents, birth parents, and the adoption and social workers who work tirelessly to bring children into loving, permanent homes.

Counsel Rachel Massey, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said, “The stories shared during National Adoption Week are so haunting and shed real light on the amazing difference adoption can make.

“Unfortunately, more and more children are being fostered and that means we need more foster families and more adoptive parents to provide forever homes for children. If you’ve thought about it, please take the first step and contact us for something amazing local children do who really need you. “

National Adoption Week brings to life some real stories and the voices of those affected by adoption with an emotional short by illustrator and adoptive parent Garry Parsons. The four-minute animated film shows the life stories and real voices of six people whose lives were changed by adoption – birth mother Anna *, single mother and adoptive mother Sarah *, social worker Paula, 11-year-old Roman who was adopted at the age of five, who was 19 -year-old Tiegan, who was adopted when she was four, and Sue, who supported her daughter through the adoption process.

Tiegan, 19, who starred in the short, said, “The adoption has been an incredibly positive experience for me. I love my adoptive mothers and have good relationships with many biological relatives, but it is important that people don’t look at adoption through rose-colored glasses.

“Growing up would have been a lot easier for me if people had a better understanding of adoption and how it shaped me as a person.”

With 2,100 children currently waiting to be adopted, it’s important to put adoption in the spotlight in order to find a safe and loving home for children who really need it.

Many activities will be held during National Adoption Week to provide insight, advice, and support. To learn more about adoption in Rochdale, visit www.adoptionnow.org.uk or call 01204 336096.
