Duncan Ferguson was so close. Barely 48 hours after becoming the Forest Green Rovers head coach, he was moments away from a 1-0 win away to Shrewsbury Town in his first game in charge.

But having lost five of their previous eight games by a single goal, it was never likely to be that straightforward for Forest Green and after Rekeil Pyke equalized for Shrewsbury in the 94th minute, Ryan Bowman slotted home a 98th-minute winner that triggered bedlam in Montgomery Waters Meadow. In an instant, the hosts had turned a 1-0 loss into a 2-1 win.

“I’ve hardly slept for three days and I won’t sleep tonight after that,” Ferguson said. “I’m not sure I can bring myself to look back on it.

“We’re
