A man has died in Rochdale after he was hit by a car while crossing the road.

Greater Manchester Police were called to Milnrow Road at around 4.40pm on January 6 to reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian.

A 50-year-old man was taken to hospital in a critical condition, but has since died of his injuries despite the best efforts of medical staff.

Police are now appealing for information after the driver fled the scene.

The car, a brown Skoda Octavia, was later found abandoned on Percy Street, Rochdale.

It is understood the car has been traveling on Chichester Street in the direction of Milnrow Road, when it overtook a vehicle waiting to turn left.

The Skoda then crossed to the opposite side of the carriageway and as it turned onto Milnrow Road, hit the victim as he crossed the road.

No arrests have been made as police continue their inquiries.

Police Sergeant Andrew Page, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This is a tragic incident in which a man has lost his life and our thoughts are very much with his family at this incredibly sad time.

“We’re continuing to appeal for information to locate the driver of the Skoda who failed to stop at the scene and we urge anyone who has any information at all to please get in touch.”
