At least one lane was closed on the westbound between Junction 20 – the A627(M) link – to Rochdale, Greater Manchester, and Junction 19 to Heywood in the same county. The collision happened today during rush hour.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and police slowed traffic on the west side. Congestion was back to Junction 21 for Newhey and Milnrow in Greater Manchester.
In a tweet, Manc Traffic said, “M62 w/b j20-19 queue building and 1 lane closed.”
No official diversions were in place at the time, according to the Manchester Evening News, but some drivers exited the motorway early.
However, drivers exited at Junction 21 and used local roads through Rochdale, including the westbound A6193, A664 and A58, rejoining the motorway at Junction 19 near Heywood.
Eastbound traffic was slow due to onlookers and backed up near Junction 19 for Heywood to Birch services.
There was no eastbound diversion and motorists were encouraged to stay on the freeway.
It’s unclear if anyone was injured in the accident, and if so, the nature and extent of the injuries have not been confirmed.
