Micky Mellon spoke to the local press ahead of Saturday’s home game against Rochdale in Sky Bet League Two. Mickey’s men are in top form, but the manager doesn’t take anything for granted.
Before visiting Rochdale on Saturday, the manager spoke about the season so far, team news flowing into the game and the opponents themselves.
He said: “I’m always very careful because the season has gone well so far. We found a way to score goals, found a way to defend well that always gives you a chance.
“We’ll keep trying to improve and find consistency. That’s the challenge now, to keep doing what we’re doing and getting better at it. If you get better at it, at least you’ll want to be consistent at it.
“You don’t want to fall below your standards and level either, so we’ll keep working hard at it and sticking hard to ourselves. Keep looking ahead and carry on. “
Mellon also spoke about the resilience of the team, highlighting the qualities that were shown in Salford on Tuesday night.
“You see it as a manager and look for signs. You search for “Is it desperate?” “Have we lost our shape?” Or “Do we trust what we do?”.
“The players continued on Tuesday evening. They never lost their shape and at some point they believed we would get this opportunity. We did it and we took it.
“There are obviously things I want us to do better at. But on Tuesday night we stuck to what we believed in and what we need to do to get results. Did we do it with as much quality as we did? No, but in terms of resilience and digging, these are great features.
“We achieved the equalizer we deserved, but we just couldn’t get the winner.”
The manager also welcomed a number of players to the roster but confirmed that one player would be out due to COVID.
“Everyone is back who was out of COVID. But the way everyone comes back, we lost one to COVID. I don’t want to say who it is, but we lost a player this week. But we won back people like McManaman, Knight-Percival, everyone came back today. “
Mellon then spoke about Saturday’s opposition, Rochdale. Rovers lost 1-0 in the second leg earlier in the season, and Mellon says they’re a good team.
“They beat us in a very close game at the beginning of the season in Rochdale. They are very capable of that. We know they are a good football team, they are a possession based team.
“But they’re coming to Prenton Park. I know the manager very well, he’s a good guy. You know my team will cut a fine figure at Prenton Park and we look forward to it. A really good game.
“We’re halfway through the season so all the games are really important. So it’s really hot and pretty local. A game we’re looking forward to. “
