Derrick Evans, or as he is better known, Mr. Motivator, was asked during the pandemic and everyone wanted to know the same thing – “How can I recover?”
He has conducted hundreds of interviews around the world sharing his optimistic advice. No wonder, since the fitness trainer has become synonymous with making people feel good since it first appeared on our television screens in the nineties in neon lycra.
“Learn to unplug the computer from the electrical outlet. Learn to enjoy the quality of life. Learn to enjoy the time you have now, ”he suggests to Nuggets, among other things.
Derrick, who now lives in Manchester with his wife Sandra, believes the past year has been a good opportunity to reevaluate what is really important, especially in terms of “taking care of one another” and realizing that we are all of this don’t need much.
“The last year has made it clear to everyone that chasing that other television that is impossible to see, the other car that you cannot drive is not that important,” he said.
“Her wish list was everything money can’t buy.”
Only four things were really important to him.
“One is the roof over my head. Food in the refrigerator – these are all wonderful blessings.
“Number three is your health and the fourth is love.
“And who you love and who loves you is your business, but if you love yourself, do it unconditionally. And when you don’t have someone to love you, look in the mirror and love you! Then you say to the world, “Look, I love myself, I am available for love.”
While the feel good factor for Derrick is the heart and the center, he would like to point out that it is also very important to acknowledge that we all struggle at times.
He argues that the past year has been tough for everyone.

“When you call your best friend and say, ‘Do you sleep well? No I’m not’. “Do you eat well? No I’m not’. ‘How do you feel? Well i’m fine They tell you that they are screaming for help, ”he said.
“You have the right to feel how you feel. Giving people permission to feel the way they feel is a reminder that they are not alone, and that can help us too. “
It would be easy to believe that it was always easy for Mr. Motivator to look on the good side, but he says it is something “that I had to learn”.
Derrick was born to a single mother in Jamaica in the 1950s and adopted as a baby.

He moved to the UK when he was 10 because his adoptive father had come to Leicester to work.
His mother came over too, but soon went back, followed a few years later by his father. And at 17, Derrick was here alone.
He talked about racism and homelessness for a while as a young single father after moving to London in the early 1970s.
“When you’ve been hungry and homeless, you value everything that’s good in your life,” says the father of three.
“When you are my age, you have graduated from the University of Life; There aren’t many pandemics that you haven’t seen before. Ask an elderly person.
“The days when I waited to find a place to sleep or I was hungry – these are pandemics to a certain extent. There’s a starting point that you can’t predict and an end point that you can’t predict, but you still need to believe that you will get through in the end. “
At 68 he feels “fitter than ever” with a lot of fuel in the tank and a new company that he likes to empathize with.
Derrick recently launched The Club – a new online hub for the elderly and those looking for alternative and accessible fitness solutions.
In addition to a range of exercise programs, including chair exercises, Pilates, and strength exercises, members receive expert advice on “eating sensibly” and mental wellbeing.
It’s also about fighting loneliness, building community – and even people who can start from scratch and maybe just do a few minutes of activity in a chair are welcome.
New members fill out a questionnaire so they can be matched with workouts and advice that best suits them.
Derrick says the program has been in the works for 30 years.

“We recognize that people live longer and that older people in particular need to try to improve their independence. One way to do this is to have a good regime around them,” he said.
“That is really my goal now, to get involved [older people] who want something different. “
The club’s goal is to make exercise accessible to all fitness levels, which was Derrick’s “bugbear” of the fitness industry.
“I wanted to stay away from having to do all those star jumps and burpees and running, and you have to do it for 30 or 45 minutes – the most important part of the exercise is that you smile,” he said.

“It doesn’t have to be so stressful for your body that it takes days for you to recover.
“Variety is the spice of life, and you are more likely to do it when you have many different options and types of exercise that fit your life and where you are.”
